Josef Eidenberger was born on May 30, 1899 in Bad Goisern, Austria. His father, Josef Eidenberger senior, worked as a servant for Count Palvi in Bad Ischl, while his mother, Maria Schneeberger, worked at the iodine and sulfur spa bath. Since both were earning only modest salaries, marrying and setting up home together were not yet a viable proposition.
